Early Life and to Boxing

Ed Malave was born on December 2, 1949, in New York City to Puerto Rican parents. Growing up in a tough neighborhood, Malave found solace and discipline in boxing. He began training at the age of 13 at the legendary Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of renowned trainer Cus D'Amato.

Malave's lanky frame and unorthodox style set him apart from his peers. He possessed lightning-fast reflexes, slippery footwork, and a never-say-die attitude. Despite his unconventional approach, Malave quickly rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a formidable opponent.

Professional Career as "The Longhaired Boxer"

In 1970, Malave turned professional and adopted his iconic moniker, "The Longhaired Boxer." With his long hair flowing behind him, Malave became a spectacle in the ring. He fought with passion and determination, captivating audiences with his fearless style.

Malave's early career was marked by a string of impressive victories. He defeated future world champions such as Roberto Duran and Esteban De Jesus, establishing himself as a serious contender in the lightweight division. In 1974, Malave earned his first world title shot against the legendary Roberto Mano de Piedra Duran.
