Section 1: The Anatomy and Physiology of the Nose and Sinuses

The nose and sinuses are a complex system of interconnected structures that play a vital role in respiration, olfaction, and facial aesthetics.

The external nose is composed of the nasal bones, the nasal cartilages, and the skin.

The nasal cavity is divided into two halves by the nasal septum. The lateral wall of each nasal cavity is lined with the paranasal sinuses.

The paranasal sinuses are air-filled cavities that are located within the facial bones.

The sinuses help to warm and humidify the air that we breathe.

They also help to produce mucus, which helps to keep the nasal cavity moist.
