In the 19th century, inventors like Lewis Latimer and Granvillie Woods emerged, developing groundbreaking technologies in the fields of lighting and transportation. Latimer is credited with inventing the carbon filament light bulb, which paved the way for affordable electric lighting. Woods, known as the "Black Edison," made significant contributions to the development of the telephone and the electric railway system.

In the latter half of the 20th century, Black inventors and entrepreneurs made significant strides in the rapidly developing field of technology.

James Edward West, a renowned inventor and physicist, holds over 250 patents, including a revolutionary microphone technology that is still used in smartphones and other electronic devices today. Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, the first African American woman to earn a doctorate in nuclear physics, went on to become the president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, leading advancements in STEM education and research.

Aisha B. Taylor, the founder of the Extreme Startups program, supports underrepresented entrepreneurs with funding and mentorship. Tonya Evans, a serial entrepreneur, has founded multiple successful businesses, including the online education platform Women Who Code.
