Code 13: The Navy's Elite Naval Special Warfare Group
Code 13 is an elite Naval Special Warfare Group (NSWG) within the United States Navy. NSWGs are responsible for conducting special operations in maritime environments, including direct action, maritime counter-terrorism, reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition, infiltration, and exfiltration. Code 13 is one of the most highly trained and experienced NSWGs in the world.

History
Code 13 was established in 1983 as a detachment of Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) 21. UDTs were originally formed during World War II to clear underwater obstacles for amphibious landings. In the 1960s, UDTs were reorganized into SEAL (Sea, Air, Land) Teams and given a broader mission set. Code 13 was one of the first SEAL Teams to be assigned to a specific geographic region, the Middle East.
Code 13 has participated in numerous combat operations over the years, including the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, and the War in Iraq. The unit has also been involved in counter-terrorism operations around the world.
Mission
Code 13's mission is to conduct special operations in maritime environments. This includes:
- Direct action
- Maritime counter-terrorism
- Reconnaissance
- Surveillance
- Target acquisition
- Infiltration
- Exfiltration
Code 13 is also responsible for training other special operations forces in maritime operations.
Training
Code 13's training is some of the most challenging and demanding in the world. Candidates must complete a rigorous selection and assessment process before they can begin training. Training includes:
- Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training
- SEAL Qualification Training (SQT)
- Advanced Special Operations Training (ASOT)
- Specialized training in maritime operations
Code 13 operators are trained to be proficient in a wide range of skills, including:
- Diving
- Swimming
- Small boat operations
- Weapons handling
- Explosives
- Close quarters combat
- Foreign languages
Equipment
Code 13 operators are equipped with the latest and greatest weapons and equipment. This includes:
- M4 carbines
- MK18 assault rifles
- M249 SAWs
- M240B machine guns
- Sniper rifles
- Grenade launchers
- Explosives
- Night vision goggles
- Thermal imaging cameras
- GPS devices>
- Communications equipment
Code 13 operators also use a variety of vehicles and boats, including:
- Zodiac boats
- Rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs)
- Submersible vehicles
- Helicopters
